We gotta take a signaling basics course every 4 years and a track safety and flagging course every 2 years.
The training center has a replica track with the types of switches and signals.
A unit of the New York State National guard was there. Those folks are some of my favorites: a competent and calming presence after 9/11 and they helped the city though every step during COVID in 2020 through the vaccinations until 2022.
Anyway during break I chatted with them. They were studying "shunting" ...in other words "sabotage".
Shunting will change the status of a signal but is unlikely to cause a crash or derailment but it can mess up a railways schedule.
I asked why and they said "environmental groups have a history of this in the Pacific north west and Canada" (True)
...and Neo Nazis are threatening commuter rail in the Northeast corridor.
So the National Guard is in training for Nazis that do not exist.
My guess is Nazis are not smart enough to shunt signals but will keep shooting at transformers.
